The overlooked cover letter 🪶, how I began my current journey at Shape, and some insights for singles ❤️😄

Say you've created a beautiful, concise, and professional CV, and you're about to send it to the company you desire or are even just considering. Most people tend to broadcast their CVs in a send-and-forget style. Remember, there are people on the other side who receive tons of CVs. How do you avoid ending up as just one in the pile? In my opinion, it's a good idea to include a personal message that demonstrates your understanding of the company's product and values, showcasing how you're a good fit for the position. And it's better not to rely solely on ChatGPT; it's easily noticeable. Does the phrase "I hope this letter finds you well" sound familiar?

Consider those two approaches for cover letters for two Danish companies.

Hey Shapers,

I saw your website and Instagram page and you look so hygge* and fun, professional and passionate about mobile development. I see myself as the same. I would love to join you guys.

* hygge, the Danish word for coziness, has been popularized by "The Little Book of Hygge" that shares why Denmark consistently ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world.

I’ve actually sent this letter and got accepted 🥳. Of course, I needed to pass the interviews, but the cover letter sure helped open the door.

If I were sending a letter to Novo Nordisk for example, I would take a more reserved note stressing my experience with medical apps development.

If I draw a parallel to dating: Imagine a nice-looking guy comes over, hands you his business card, and moves along. Most likely, you would use it as a coaster.

And what about a guy who throws a generic line at you like, "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven? 😉" No thank you, next!

But the one who looks you in the eyes and says something personal, like: "You look so kind and adventurous. I would love to get to know you and join you on your journey," I'll bet you would at least give him a chance.

Good luck with your applications 🪶
